Science, back again!

    Science (from Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanationsand predictions about the universe. In an older and closely related meaning (found, for example, in Aristotle), "science" refers to the body of reliable knowledge itself, of the type that can be logically and rationally explained (see History and philosophy below). Since classical antiquity science as a type of knowledge was closely linked to philosophy. In the early modern era the words "science" and "philosophy" were sometimes used interchangeably in the English language. By the 17th century, natural philosophy (which is today called "natural science") was considered a separate branch of philosophy. However, "science" continued to be used in a broad sense denoting reliable knowledge about a topic, in the same way it is still used in modern terms such as library science or political science.

   As early as when we were only toddlers then, we were exposed to Science subject. Teachers keenly explaining us facts about everything that surrounds us. Giving us a knowledge of how, what, and if's about anything under and above the sun. But to my surprise when I turned college, I was deprived of this subject. Then this year, I am on my 3rd year now in Fine Arts, Science was back again! 

    Last Thursday, June 14, 2012 was our second meeting of the Nat Science 102 subject with Professor Crisencio Paner. He discussed with us the overview of basically the whole semester's topics that we will tackle through along. I was a bit excited with the subject because somehow it would be a recap of all the learnings i got back then after more than 2 years of Science subject deprivation. To be not verbose, i would just give you a glimpse or some idea of how the introduction or overview went and some topics that were discussed with the class based on the notes that i took.. :)

    To start, Earth Science encompasses all sciences that seek to understand first the planet Earth itself, then second Earth's neighbors in space. Earth Science includes Geology, Oceanography, Meteorology, and Astronomy. Geology is the study of Earth; Specifically the study of land on solid aspect of the Earth. Oceanography on the other hand is the study of the ocean; It is said that ocean made up 71% of the Earth. Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and the processes that produce weather. Lastly, Astronomy is the study of the universe.

   Next topic was the Formation of the Earth, Nebular Hypothesis was included. In this theory, it was explained that the Solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called the "Solar Nebula". Viewed next were the Layers Form on Earth. Included were the Earth's major spheres which were Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere and Lastly Geosphere.  Geosphere consists of Earth's crust, mantle, and core.

    The overview ended up with Science, that it assumes the natural world.
